What are Porcelain Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations used to repair damage or decay. If the damage is not extensive enough to warrant the use of a dental crown but is too serious to be repaired with a filling, our experienced dentist may recommend a dental inlay or onlay. Also known as partial crowns, inlays and onlays are custom-created from porcelain, composite resin, or gold. Our dentist will ensure that your custom inlay or onlay perfectly fits your tooth to restore the health, function, and appearance of your smile. Once placed, they are virtually undetectable in the mouth and conserve much of your natural tooth structure.

Both inlays and onlays are used to restore damaged teeth. The difference between a dental inlay and a dental onlay is that an inlay is used when the damage does not reach the cusps of the tooth, while a dental onlay is used when the damage extends to one or more of the cusps. We will help you determine whether you need a dental inlay or onlay to restore your smile. We welcome you to call or visit us today to learn more about dental inlays and onlays. We are eager to restore your smile!

Inlays & Onlays procedure details

The inlays and onlays procedure usually concludes in two sessions. During your first session, our dentists examine your oral anatomy, take digital x-rays, and review your dental history. After the initial tests and consultation, we take a mold or impression of your teeth, allowing us to create customized dental inlays and onlays. We also remove all the infected, decayed, or damaged parts of your teeth or old fillings.

Once the cavity or damage is thoroughly cleaned, we prepare it to receive the inlays/ onlays and provide a temporary filling to protect the space while the permanent restorations are prepared. During your second session, we cement the new inlays and onlays in place and make the necessary adjustments to ensure they fit properly. Our dentists ensure the final restoration looks perfectly natural, blending into your surrounding teeth to be inconspicuous.

  • Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a nice big office that is comfortable.

I was there for a new patient appointment to have x-rays taken and to meet the doctor, who I really liked. I then waited to see the dental hygienist for my cleaning and because I did both, I was there about 2 hours.
